Faith NC
Faith North Carolina, located in Rowan County, is a rural small town that holds substantial beliefs and social norms. These are based on its geography, culture, and those who have called it home. Like many other towns in North Carolina and the broader South, Faith is marked by a history of racial exclusion, that still pulses through the streets.
The history of Faith can still be seen through town events and everyday life there, the Fourth of July celebrations, and signs around the town. These histories, being its social norms that were common during the Jim Crow era, the town has been reported to be a sundown town during that time. And those social norms, deeply ingrained and passed down through generations, shaped how people lived, how they saw one another, and who belonged.
Faith’s past is woven into the present day Many who still live here grew up with those same codes, those same beliefs, passed on like heirlooms. And in some ways, this history has set the stage for the far-right ideologies that dominate the town today. As someone who grew up around this town and these ideals, I explore how these histories shape the lives of those who call the town home. I document the town of Faith during these town events and everyday life.
